Bluetooth Shortcut Keyboard guide

Use an Android phone as a Bluetooth keyboard for a computer

Bluetooth Keyboard Shortcut turns a compatible Android phone into a Bluetooth shortcut keypad, keyboard and pointer for a computer. Start with one connection and a harmless text test before building a custom deck. The computer receives ordinary Bluetooth input; it does not need a companion app.

These guides describe the prepared 2.46 source. Its Google Play publication is not confirmed. The Store link opens the current public release, whose controls and available features may differ. Device and host compatibility vary.

What to know

  • Requires Android 9 or newer, a phone with Bluetooth HID Device support, and a computer that permits Bluetooth keyboard pairing.
  • Pairing guide chooses the instructions you see; Change beside Shortcut keys selects the modifier convention used by the app.
  • Begin with the free keyboard and basic controls. Pro is not a fix for unsupported Bluetooth hardware.

Before you start

Install the Android app and keep it open while pairing. This guide describes an Android phone sending input to a Mac or Windows PC; it is not an iPhone app setup guide.

Check whether your computer permits new Bluetooth keyboards. No receiver app is required, but workplace rules and device restrictions still apply. Save work on the computer and open an empty text document for the first test.

How to do it

  1. Allow Bluetooth access

Open the app and follow its permission prompts. On Android versions that request Nearby devices, allow that access so the phone can pair and send input. If the app shows Bluetooth off, use Turn on Bluetooth. A notification permission prompt is separate from the nearby-device connection permission.

  2. Check the shortcut convention

Open Connect computer. Under Pairing guide, choose Mac or Windows to display the relevant instructions. Read Shortcut keys below it. If that line names the wrong system, use Change; changing the guide chip alone does not change the shortcuts.

  3. Make the phone visible

Choose Make discoverable and respond to Android’s Bluetooth prompt. On the computer, open Bluetooth settings and look for the phone. On Mac, the app points to System Settings → Bluetooth → Nearby Devices. On Windows, use Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.

  4. Confirm the pairing

Choose the phone on the computer and accept the pairing request on both screens. Wait for the app’s connection status. If the computer is already paired, use its entry in Connect computer to reconnect rather than creating another pairing unnecessarily.

  5. Verify what reaches the computer

Click in the empty text document on the computer, open Keyboard on the phone and send a few ordinary letters. Then try one harmless shortcut. A Connected label reports the Bluetooth connection; confirm the visible result on the computer before trusting a larger macro.

Choose a useful first screen

ScreenA practical first use
ButtonsA small grid of shortcuts such as Copy, Paste and Find.
KeyboardDirect key input and a simple test of the connection and host layout.
MouseMove the pointer, click and scroll.
ToolsOpen additional surfaces such as Numpad, Jog / Scrub and Trackpad + Keys.

Keep the first deck simple

The free tier supports one page with up to 12 buttons, all macro step types, and the basic keyboard and pointer tools. Extra pages, the 4 × 5 grid and selected advanced controls require Pro. Check the app’s upgrade screen for the available purchase and trial terms rather than assuming a fixed price.

Input goes to the computer’s focused application, just like a physical keyboard. Start with a blank document, not a password field, terminal command or active work form. Text macros use a US ASCII key mapping, so the host keyboard layout and input method can change the resulting characters.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Bluetooth availability, phone firmware and host restrictions affect compatibility; this is not a promise that every phone or managed computer works.
  • Ordinary Bluetooth input is distinct from optional Google Drive sync, purchases and user-configured HTTPS webhook actions, which may use network services.

Questions and answers

Will any Android 9 phone work?

No. Android 9 is the minimum version, but the manufacturer must also expose the Bluetooth HID Device capability. If the app persistently reports Not supported on this phone, Pro cannot add missing firmware support.

Do I install something on the computer?

The keyboard and pointer connection uses the computer’s Bluetooth input support and does not require a companion receiver app. The computer must still allow Bluetooth pairing and input.

Can I skip Google Drive sign-in?

Yes. Drive sync is optional and separate from Bluetooth pairing. You can set up the basic keyboard without connecting a Google account.
